norwegian producer thomas urv drops the småskansen ep on his own ploink imprint this april. one of norways leading techno prospects, thomas urv has promoted and played at countless events across the country featuring the likes of jeff mills, juan atkins, derrick may, carl cox, richie hawtin, robert hood and kevin saunderson. when not delivering his three deck performances across scandinavia, spain, france, holland, canada and the uk (for fabric and bestival) the norse producer is firmly focused on ploink and his studio activities. *fuktig sol* leads the ep and is a sinister cut led by a morose hook and syncopated rhythm whilst whirring atmospherics add to a looming tension. the dark undertones continue in *stell/less* although steady kicks construct a vibe better suited towards peak time dancefloor madness. tying up the release *sånn isbre* delivers a frenzy of layered sounds that evolve over the course of a lengthy 16 minutes.

a club in the parthenon basement where you cant see in front of you, you lose yourself as the antipodean heat beat surrounds you. this is the latest imagination of melbourne-based band leader nicolaas oogjes. marrying into a greek family (his wife contributes spoken word on two tracks), oogjes became fixated with hellenic culture and its impact on humanity, prompting his rotating cult of collective consciousness musicians no zu to spiral deeper into their celebration of global rhythm and percussion. their even weirder, sparser and more synth driven sound is the result of creative exchanges with home loan records ceo michael ozone, who helped them realise the strange and complete world of medusa music.

out of rome, sofatalk soars high on this ep, feeling out the difference between a lifetime on earth or one really cool moment above it. the title track breathes and evolves via a series of flourishes on the playful side of things - this one is no beard stroker. cloudy soul keeps the optimism and front foot action rolling with an excursion slightly to the deeper end without ever fully taking the plunge. wrapping it up, on reflection is a tight little rhythm-box-driven number that takes you by surprise, transplanting you from the floor to the lower middle stratosphere without you realising. japanese producer 9dw then turns it into a hot stepper of its own, keeping the energy up there but differentiating the bounce.

for those turned on by the far-sighted, sci-fi inspired sounds of detroit deep house and techno, this ep from michael zucker s finale underground imprint (an offshoot of his finale sessions label) should be an essential purchase. with the likes of patrice scott, keith worthy and luke hess involved, you d expect the quality threshold to be high. it is, of course, resulting in a quartet of killer tracks. hess hypnotic techno jam -tolox- is a definite highlight, though it pales in comparison to the analogue futurism of keith worthy s brilliant -cyclops-. best of all, though, is scott s -journey into the unknown-, which bobs, weaves, bubbles and spits to the rush-inducing deep house sound of undulating synthesizer melodies and classic, transmat-style motor city rhythm
